ThesettlementwasapprovedonTuesdayandwillaverage$1.1millionforeachwomanwhosuedtheprisonformistreatmentandstaff-on-inmatesexualabuse.
“Weweresentencedtoprison,wewerenotsentencedtobeassaultedandabused,”lawsuitplaintiffandformerDublinprisonerAimeeChaviratoldTheAssociatedPress.
“Ihopethissettlementwillhelpsurvivors,likeme,astheybegintoheal–butmoneywillnotrepairtheharmthatBOPdidtous,orfreesurvivorswhocontinuetosufferinprison,orbringbacksurvivorswhoweredeportedandseparatedfromtheirfamilies,”shesaid.
